Education Science and Management College

Education Science and Management College, formerly Department of Education in Southwest Associated University, one of the earliest-built departments of Yunnan Normal University in Anti-Japanese War period, was formed in 1938 from the merger of the Education Department and Department of Philosophy from Peking University, Departments of Philosophy and Department of Psychology from Tsinghua University, Department of Philosophic Education from Nankai University, as well as Education Department from Yunnan University. It has now developed into a teaching and research oriented college with characteristics of the teacher education in Yunnan Normal University. Its Education and Psychology disciplines have obvious superiority and rank first in Yunnan Province.

There are 81 teaching and administrative staff and 66 full-time teachers in the college, including 14 professors, 25 associate professors, 4 doctoral supervisors, 52 Master supervisors, 3 post-doctors, 23 doctors and 4 doctoral candidates. Teachers with master degree accounts for 75%. The teacher team of our college is constructed as follows: 1 Yunnan provincial teaching master, 2 school-level teaching masters, 4 provincial academic and technology leaders, 1 subject leader of provincial universities and colleges, 1 school-level young scholar from Southwest Associated University, 2 specially-appointed professors, 3 subject leaders and 3 key teachers and training objects.

The college currently offers 5 undergraduate majors (including Pedagogy, Applied Psychology, Preschool Education, Public Service Management and Special Education), 2 master conferrable spots for first-level disciplines (Pedagogy and Psychology), 8 master conferrable spots for secondary disciplines (including Educational Principle, Curriculum and Teaching Methodology, Preschool Pedagogy, Comparative Education, Organizational and Ideological Education for Juvenile and Children, Developmental and Educational Psychology, Basic Psychology and Applied Psychology), and 5 professional master conferrable spots (including Education Administration, Preschool Education, Special Education, Psychological Health Education and Applied Psychology). By May 2016, the college already has had 1385 undergraduate students, 230 academic master candidates and 87 professional masters.

For discipline construction, Pedagogy has been approved as “New first-level discipline with provincial approval and doctoral program” and has developed into provincial key major and national characteristic major; Psychology, under the construction of provincial key disciplines and jointly constructing key disciplines with Zhejiang University, has been approved as “Provincial predominant and characteristic discipline”. For research platform construction, the college has obtained 2 national research platforms (“Key Lab of Ministry of Education for IT-based national Education” and “Research Center for Preschool Education Equipment”), 1 provincial expert work rooms, 1 national characteristic major - Pedagogy, 1 construction project - the national online excellent course“Effective Teaching”, and 2 provincial projects - research bases for Yunnan Education Development and Southwest Associated University. For scientific research, our school’s achievements are as follows: has successively undertake 145 national and provincial scientific research topics on National Natural Science Foundation, National Philosophy and Social Science, National Education Scientific Planning and Yunnan Provincial Philosophy and Social Science etc; has carried out 20 Latitudinal projects of UNESCO, UNDP and Ford Foundation etc.; has published over 900 academic papers, over 300 of which are high-level publications; has published 138 works; has been awarded 2 first prizes, 5 second prizes and over 10 third prizes of Yunnan Philosophy and Social Science Excellence Achievement Prize, as well as over 150 provincial excellent achievements of educational research.

In recent years, the college emphasizes both teaching and scientific research. Meanwhile, it actively plays its social service function to provide theoretical research and practice instruction for the following fields: Yunnan’s basic education development, regional education, rural education in minority nationality regions, teacher education, cross-cultural psychology research, psychology and education research for special populations, psychological health education of primary and secondary school students and teachers, social early-warning etc. Moreover, the college actively conducts domestic and foreign cooperation and communication: Set up research community with domestic famous colleges and universities (like East China Normal University and Northwest Normal University) to carry out subject research; launch students exchange project with Taiwan Chung-Hsin High School; carry out wide academic and personnel exchange with famous universities (like Columbia University, Malmo University and University of Windsor etc.)
